Cold Paths Direct to Decision Makers

Get Hired

Pillar 4: Cold Paths to Decision Makers (quick-start)

This is where you work your cold leads, the companies where you have no connection. Instead of applying into the void, you find the exact person who can hire you, get their email or message them directly, and lead with your work. Use the attached doc for the full tool workflows and all the templates.

Core idea: for a cold lead, do not apply and wait. Find the decision maker, reach them directly, and lead with your work, not a resume.

Who to target (go wider than the recruiter)

Most people only try the recruiter. There are more doors, and several convert better:

  • Own or influence the role: the hiring manager or engineering manager, whoever's named on the posting, and the founder or CTO at small startups (they are the hiring manager).

  • Peers who pull you in: lead, staff, and senior engineers on the team, and recently-hired engineers who just did the process and will refer.

  • Talent side: in-house recruiters, head of people at small companies, and agency recruiters plus their account managers (one relationship opens several doors).

  • Semi-warm angles: alumni, people who engaged with your content, speakers and OSS maintainers, and any second-degree path to the hiring manager (get an intro instead).

Unique angles that get replies

Engage before you message (comment first). Reference a real technical decision they made. Lead with value, not just an ask. Time it to a funding round or launch. And go up to the founder at small companies.

Find their email, three ways

  • LinkedIn + company site + Hunter.io: find the person, get the domain, run Hunter's Domain Search to get the email pattern, use Email Finder, then verify. Fallbacks: apply the pattern manually, or check their GitHub or personal site.

  • Apollo: People search by company, title, and department, reveal the verified email, and use the Chrome extension to see it right on their LinkedIn profile.

  • Always verify before sending. A bounce hurts your credibility.

Sales Navigator (the paid one)

It lets you pinpoint the exact person and InMail them even when you're not connected. Core workflow: filter, save leads into a list per company, and message with InMail (spend them on the highest-value people first).

  • Hiring manager: filter Current company plus Engineering plus Manager or Director, matched to the team on the posting.

  • Lead or senior engineer: same company, titles like Staff, Lead, or Senior AI Engineer; a peer-to-peer message, and they can refer you in.

  • Agency account manager or recruiter: search AI and ML staffing agencies, filter to Account Manager, Client Partner, or Technical Recruiter.

Lead with the work

Every message references something specific, shows what you built, and makes a light ask, never "please hire me" or a resume attachment. The doc has five ready templates: InMail to a hiring manager, InMail to a lead engineer, InMail to an agency recruiter, a full email to a hiring manager, and the follow-up.

Multi-channel and cadence

Reach the same person on LinkedIn and email; it doubles your replies. Follow up day 0, day 3 to 4, day 8 to 10, and day 14, short, add value, easy out. Log every touch, and apply through the portal too, since the outreach and the application go together.

Avoid these

Applying and waiting, leading with the ask, generic blasts, using one channel or contacting one person, no follow-up, and sending unverified emails.

Go deeper: the doc

This is the quick-start. The attached Pillar 4 doc has the full Hunter.io, Apollo, and Sales Navigator workflows, the expanded target list with angles, and all five message templates. Bring your questions to the group calls.
